Catherine Stihler (S&D). - Mr President, as we all know, the way we book our holidays has changed. Technology has transformed the way the travel market operates, making the current rules almost obsolete. The overwhelming growth of internet sales reflects these changes but adds to the complexity of the leisure travel market. Therefore, with this new reality in mind, I welcome this report and the reforms proposed by Parliament, as they will ensure not only greater protection for consumers but also a higher degree of certainty for travel businesses regarding the extent of their potential liabilities. It is essential to update the current rules to reflect the modern reality, market and methods of trading.

These reforms ensure increased clarity and flexibility for consumers, which, in turn, will also increase consumer confidence. It is vital that we close loopholes and make clear to travel companies their duty of care to holidaymakers and their own liability. I hope the Member States will support these reforms and not use delaying tactics, which will only be detrimental to European citizens and businesses alike.
