Enhancing worker mobility by improving the acquisition and preservation of supplementary pension rights (debate)
MPphoto

Phil Bennion (ALDE). - Madam President, I welcome this directive as a positive single market measure to protect mobile workers. Supplementary schemes are becoming more and more important in many Member States, so it is pertinent that an agreement in this area has finally been reached and that barriers to mobility, such as vesting and waiting periods, have been addressed. If someone has worked hard in one EU country and has taken the decision to put money aside into a supplementary pension scheme, they should be assured that they will not lose out by deciding to work somewhere else in the Union or to live somewhere else in the Union.

They should also be provided with the necessary information to make an informed decision. This directive provides for that. It was sensible to confine the directive to cross-border issues, because at least now we have something very positive to go forward with and to use in this respect. It is a good thing that it is no longer stuck and that we have something agreed.
