Posting of workers in the framework of the provision of services (debate)

Marije Cornelissen (Verts/ALE). - Mr President, this directive is not going to mend all the loopholes which exist in the free movement legislation. It is not going to make sure that no more European workers will be underpaid, bereft of social rights or living in circumstances that are unfit for human beings. But although this directive will not save the world, it will improve the lives of a large number of people.

Labour inspections will have more instruments to check on posted workers. Member States will be forced to work together better; they will have the power to address abuse better; they will be obliged to inform workers better. Would I have wanted more? Yes, of course, but I cannot imagine voting against this. If this compromise will improve the lives of even just a few people who are treated horribly now, I can only vote in favour. And immediately after that, we need to start working even harder to really rule out exploitation of all workers in Europe.
