Digital single market (debate)

Nils Torvalds (ALDE). - Mr President, if words could be transformed into action by digital means, the digital single market would certainly be in place already. But the world does not function in that way and we have a lot of challenges in front of us.

This House is not actually leading, either. When we have to report our journeys from Strasbourg back to our hometown we have to do it on paper, even if the boarding passes we have are already digital. So, if we could get some action in this House, we could probably make some progress.

Commissioner Barnier, I do not know if you are allowed to google anymore, but if you are, then you can google Helsinki Region Infoshare, as Helsinki city and region has actually opened up a lot of data and information to be used by SMEs or by individuals. They have created apps which are used by the citizens in the region. So they actually did it another way. They opened it up to possibilities; they opened up the market. If we were able to do it the same way and not just wait for the right paper to be written, we could probably achieve the digital agenda slightly faster.
