Daniel Hannan (ECR). - Madam President, I was astonished by the number of people in this Chamber who are now prepared to act directly as cat’s paws for Vladimir Putin while calling themselves patriots, calling themselves even nationalists in their home countries. There seems to have been a strange ‘my enemy’s enemy is my friend’ reasoning that has led people into alliance and to become apologists for an organisation, or an ideology, which happens to be against the EU. Well, I think the European Union is an undemocratic racket, but that is not what is at issue in Ukraine. What is at issue there is the yearning of people to live in a normal country where property rights are respected, where contracts are honoured, where there is a pluralist multi-party system and where the individual is free of state control. You can support that system with or without supporting the European Union. My kind of euroscepticism is internationalist, cosmopolitan, open, warm and optimistic and it has no space in it for sympathy for Putinism.
