Recent terrorist attacks (debate)

Indrek Tarand (Verts/ALE), in writing. The recent escalation in the number of terrorist attacks, both on European soil and outside Europe, is certainly a cause for concern. We should not forget the victims and their families, and we should stand up for them.

However, we should not forget another issue which has remained unresolved for over half a year now. The victim in this case is still alive and could be saved by a relatively simple action. I am talking about the Estonian police officer Eston Kohver who was illegally kidnapped from Estonian soil by Russian state agents. In clear breach of international law he remains illegally detained in a Russian prison. This attack was clearly politically motivated as it came shortly after President Obama visited Estonia and pledged his continuing support for ʽfree and independent and democratic Baltic nationsʼ. Ceterum censeo the European Union cannot bend to such reprisals and illegitimate demonstrations of force, and therefore should unanimously demand the immediate release of Mr Kohver.
