Philippe De Backer (ALDE),in writing. – I endorse the motion of the resolution because I cannot ignore the problems that the Turkish citizens are currently facing. The government continuously disregards the rule of law, human rights and democratic values. Corruption is thriving and the independence of the media is under threat. With regard to the latter, the violent takeover of the Turkish newspaper Zaman (and others) was illegal and contrary to the values that the EU (or any other democracy) stands for. In addition, its anti-terrorism laws seem to be in violation of the ECHR, which needs to be respected by Turkey. In addition, the resolution calls upon peace and stability in the Kurdish region and expresses over recent developments with regard to these populations. However, Turkey remains our partner, both on economic terms and politically. In this regard, the resolution recognises its efforts in countering ISIL and other areas of cooperation between us. With regard to the refugee crisis, I would have very much liked to see an EU solution to the refugee crisis. Since we have chosen not to, I can now, at least, welcome the call for closely monitoring that the EU funds to Turkey of EUR 3 billion, are properly spent.
