Massacres in eastern Congo (debate)

Eduard Kukan (PPE). – Madam President, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) lives in a constant state of superficial peace and superficial security. The latest outbreak of violence in the north of the country has left everyone shocked. We saw hundreds of murders, disappearances, rapes and the wiping out of crucial infrastructure. Unfortunately, we also saw only mild and slow international reaction to such armed violence. I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

In this situation, immediate violence must be ended, and all armed groups must lay down their arms. The international community, including the EU, should be more present, more vocal and more instrumental, and offer support to disarmament. MONUSCO also needs to be able to react faster in order to protect civilians.

Furthermore, due investigation into these crimes must be carried out and the perpetrators must be brought to justice. Without drawing clear responsibility for these crimes, the atmosphere of impunity will continue to poison the country and we can expect repeated outbursts of violence. I am sure that citizens of the DRC deserve better after 20 years of violence and armed conflicts.
