Renewable energy progress report - Implementation report on the Energy Efficiency Directive (continuation of debate)

Claude Turmes (Verts/ALE). – Mr President, I will concentrate on the renewables report, which is a good report apart from one bad sentence in paragraph 9. The question is that wind and solar have become much cheaper and more mature. Does that mean that we can invest in renewable energy without any support? That depends on the markets and the status of the markets. Today we have, because of the failure of EU ETS, very low CO2 prices, which means that we have a huge overcapacity in Europe given that the coal power plants remain in the market. How can wind and solar be invested in if power prices are, in large parts of Europe, at EUR 20-25 per megawatt-hour? And do not forget that as long as we have not made major changes to market design, each time the wind blows and the sun shines wind and solar will cost less than the average power prices. So please vote with the Greens on our split vote on paragraph 9. We cannot make renewable investments without having a revenue stream for renewables in this market.
