EU action plan against wildlife trafficking (debate)

Emma McClarkin, rapporteur for the opinion of the Committee on International Trade. blue-card question. – Mr President, illegal wildlife trade is a global problem with implications that go beyond wildlife: the threat to our ecosystems as well as our global security. Sharp increases in wildlife crime and the increasing involvement of organised criminals only go to emphasise that the moment to act is now. We need a full-ranging, comprehensive approach, one that tackles not only economic development in source countries but also supply chains and demand in domestic markets and other destination countries. Trade policy, customs, law enforcement and development policies must be coherent and complementary, and sufficient resources must be available.

The EU and its Member States must lead these efforts, ensuring that appropriate wildlife sustainability provisions are prioritised in its trade policy and included in all future trade agreements, with the aim of elimination of illegal wildlife trade. My own-initiative report, which will be voted in the Committee on International Trade (INTA) next January, reflects these concerns and the ambitions of my colleague Catherine Bearder’s report. I therefore welcome this report and I am fully supportive of it.

(The speaker agreed to take a blue-card question under Rule 162(8))
