Marju Lauristin (S&D ). – Mr President, there is a saying that it is better do something good late than never. I think that if we had had the European Pillar of Social Rights at the beginning of the enlargement process, we would not now have such big differences between the new Member States and the old ones. It is very good that, before making the very important changes which come with the digital revolution, we are now discussing what we have to do with regard to social rights and defining social protection for decent working people in this new situation. We very much hope that we will do this in time and that, before these jobs disappear and new jobs arrive, we will have an understanding of the new social policy and standards and the common social pillar. Then we will an upward convergence rather than a downward one, which is what we have seen up to now.
