Bas Eickhout (Verts/ALE). – Mr President, firstly, I would like to thank the rapporteur for her great work in getting to this deal and, indeed, I would also like to thank the Commission. We have come a long way in the discussions and I think we are now on the same page concerning the importance of the circular economy. What we are doing here is making sure that waste can be used in the circular economy, but we know that we also need to look at how to create a demand for reused and recycled material and at making sure that the design is ready so that we can create a circular economy. This is a very good, and very important, step, but we are not there yet.

We are asking for, and expecting, additional steps from the Commission, as also announced in the Action Plan. For those who are always referring to impact assessments and saying that it is important, the higher targets will deliver EUR 6 billion in benefits to society: 34 000 more jobs and 99 million tonnes of CO2 reduction. People, planet, profits, thanks to the higher targets. Read the impact assessment.
