End-of-life vehicles, waste batteries and accumulators and waste electrical and electronic equipment - Landfill of waste - Waste - Packaging and packaging waste (debate)

Daciana Octavia Sârbu (S&D), in writing. – Today we vote on an important set of proposals to increase recycling and reduce waste in Europe. Every day we throw away valuable raw materials and increase our environmental footprint, depleting our planet’s finite resources. Such actions undermine our own policies on resource efficiency and simply defy common sense. While under-nutrition remains a severe problem in many parts of the world, we still throw away up to one third of our food. And it’s not just a question of wasting the food. There are huge environmental and health impacts of using water, energy, fertilizers, pesticides, and packaging to produce and transport food which is ultimately thrown away. I am pleased that the Environment Committee supported my proposals for a definition of food waste. This is a basic requirement for monitoring and reducing such waste, but it is still lacking at European level.
