Decision adopted on the European Pillar of Social Rights and work-life balance initiative (debate)
Csaba Sógor (PPE). – Mr President, the structure of our societies is changing before our eyes while trade patterns and technology cause enormous transformations in our work environment. These shifts lead to both opportunities and challenges. Even though the EU accounts for around 40% of global public social expenditure, around one-in-four of its citizens lives at risk of poverty or social exclusion. In my country, for example, income inequality is alarming: the richest 20% of the population has an income more than eight times higher than that of the poorest 20%. This causes a vicious circle of extreme poverty, social exclusion, precarious health and poor education.
The European project was from its inception a bedrock for the economic development of our Member States. It is now time that we reinforce the social dimension of our Union and create a sensible impetus towards 21st century reforms, leading to more inclusive economic growth, job creation and social convergence. This is why I am looking forward to working on the Commission proposal.
