Benedek Jávor (Verts/ALE), in writing. – Although it is difficult to forecast the results of the negotiations between the UK and the EU, Brexit will definitely allow the UK to reduce ambition in its climate, energy, environment policies – possibly in the form of the targets/standards. Or targets remain unchanged, yet the EU cannot exert its enforcement powers anymore, which can result in implementation deficiencies. This is particularly true in the areas of biodiversity, water and waste management, air quality and energy transition. As for the elements of the circular economy, the UK might be reluctant to put in place measures for cutting the use of natural resources, for waste reduction or for better recycling. Any steps in this direction would send a bad signal to specific Member States who consider some of the EU law too much of a challenge. Thus, the erosion of environmental standards in the UK after Brexit may have a harmful spill-over effect for other regions of Europe. Therefore, I call on the Commission to give environment policies priority during the negotiations and make sure that environmental and human health considerations play an important role in the future relations between the EU and the UK.
