Statements by the President

Sajjad Karim (ECR). – Mr President, I will make two very brief points. Firstly, today I read a report issued by EU citizens in the United Kingdom, highlighting the discrimination that they are now beginning to face in a variety of forms. This has been taken up by the British Government Minister. May I ask you, through your office, to provide the necessary assistance that the British Government may need in order to make sure that this matter is stamped out immediately and that such discrimination cannot be tolerated? Certainly it reminded me of a bygone era when adverts would be placed stating ‘no blacks and no dogs’. We will not tolerate any such discrimination.

Secondly, what powers do you have in your office, Mr President, in terms of the award of a Sakharov Prize, when the holder of such a prize is then blatantly conducting activities, speaking words and carrying out actions which go against the very spirit on which such awards are given? How can we revisit the awards that have previously been given in such circumstances?
