EU support to the Colombian peace process (debate)
Boris Zala (S&D). – Mr President, the peace agreement with the FARC was also a victory for European diplomacy and external action. We have invested great resources, political attention and effort in supporting Colombia’s path to peace, to help create a political and social context in which the implementation of the 2016 agreement was possible. But the situation today after the latest ELN terrorist attack and the collapse of the ceasefire is becoming fragile.
The EU was right to despatch Eamon Gilmore as a Special Envoy. He played a key role in the peace deal and this should continue. The EU should actively support the implementation of the 2016 accords in full. In this respect, the Trust Fund for Colombia is a useful tool. It should be expanded and all Member States should contribute. It requires long-term investment in reconciliation, inclusive democratic institutions, and economic development.
