Three-dimensional printing: intellectual property rights and civil liability (A8-0223/2018 - Joëlle Bergeron)
Daniel Hannan (ECR). – Mr President, innovators are always far ahead of regulators. The entrepreneurs are designing these wonderful innovations, leaving governments panting and wheezing several furlongs behind: as in 3D printing, the current inventions in biotech, in AI, vaping, whatever. Now, some in this House regard that distance as regrettable, because they see unregulated as synonymous with illegal. Me? I see it as the most hopeful sign that, despite the best efforts of politicians everywhere, economies will continue to grow. As long as you switch the tap off and as long as you stop adding new regulations, old ones become redundant over time. Who cares these days what the regulations are on steamboats or fax machines? Always, the innovator is in front of the regulator. Think of the state as being like one of those old temples swallowed up in the rainforests in India or in Central America. The green shoots are vibrant with the life of the inventive entrepreneur and the pillars and flagstones are what’s left of the old regulatory structure.
