Debate with the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, on the Future of Europe (debate)
MPphoto

Viviane Reding (PPE). – Mr President, in addressing the Prime Minister I would like to say to him that you, Mr Prime Minister, are leading a great nation and you are leading a great people and they deserve nothing more and nothing less than a government which respects the democratic institutions for the sake of its own citizens. So why on earth are you dismantling your independent justice? Why don’t you listen to the wise men and women of the Venice Commission, who expressed their deep concerns? Do you still respect the European Court of Justice?

You have a responsibility for your country and for your people so, for God’s sake, don’t destroy the democratic basis on which your country is built, and give us back Poland as a reliable, constructive and influential member of the European family. You need it and we need it.

(Applause)
