on the accident at the AZF plant in Toulouse

European Parliament resolution on the accident at the AZF plant in Toulouse

The European Parliament,

A.  whereas the explosion at the AZF plant in Toulouse killed 29 people and injured more than 2000 others,

B.  whereas this highly dangerous plant is located in a densely populated urban area,

1.  Expresses its sympathy with the families of the victims;

2.  Calls for full light to be shed on the real circumstances of this tragedy, without excluding the possibility of criminal, or even terrorist, involvement;

3.  Calls for all those responsible for the circumstances which led to this disaster to be held to account - not only the firms concerned but also the municipal and national authorities;

4.  Calls on the European Union to demonstrate it solidarity with those affected by releasing emergency aid, as it has done to help regions hit by natural disasters;

5.  Notes the ineffectiveness and pointlessness of the European Union's environmental protection policy, in particular the 'Seveso' directives;

3.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission and Council.
