European Parliament resolution on the situation in Kosovo

The European Parliament,

–  recalling its previous resolutions on Kosovo,

–  having regard to Rule 37(2) of the Rules of Procedure,

A.  alarmed by the worst outbreak of violence in Kosovo in five years, which has left dozens dead and about a thousand people injured and has resulted in the destruction of several hundred houses and about 40 Orthodox churches, monastries, schools and other buildings throughout Kosovo,

B.  deeply concerned for the thousands of members of the Serbian community in Kosovo who are reported to have fled their homes as a result of the violence,

1.  Condemns the recent attacks on and the killings of Serbs in Kosovo, as well as the destruction of Orthodox religious buildings and shrines;

2.  Condemns, equally, the destruction of Muslim religious buildings in Serbia;

3.  Calls on the Albanians in Kosovo to allow their Serbian compatriots who have fled to areas under KFOR protection to return to their homes;

4.   Calls on the government in Belgrade to dismantle all parallel structures it supports in Kosovo, also as a clear signal to the Kosovo Serbs that they should commit themselves fully to the reconstruction of Kosovo;

5.  Looks to the UN to transfer in the near future a substantial proportion of its current powers in Kosovo to the Kosovo Government;

6.  Urges the EU, together with the international community, to consider without further delay all questions relating to the future status of Kosovo;

7.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the Government of Serbia and the Kosovo Government.
