B6‑0061/2009

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on placereducing the salary of Members of the European Parliament in view of the economic recession in Europe and the global financial and economic crisis

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the decision of the European Parliament of 28 September 2005 adopting the Statute for Members of the European Parliament (2005/684/EC, Euratom),

–  having regard to the forecast issued by the European Commission on 19 January 2009, which expects the entire European Union to go into recession,

–  having regard to Rule 113 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  having regard to the global economic crisis, which is far from over and whose impact will have far-reaching consequences across all sectors,

B.  whereas the costs of economic recession should be borne by everyone, including elected representatives,

1.  Believes that in the light of the current economic recession it is neither justified nor fair to maintain the Statute for Members of the European Parliament as adopted in 2005;

2.  Proposes that, before the start of its new parliamentary term in 2009, the European Parliament review all the articles governing the amount of the salary and the entitlement to a transitional allowance and old-age pension of its Members;

3.  Proposes that the salary of Members of the European Parliament adopted in the Statute in September 2005 be cut by 30%.
