MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the eradication of poverty

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the eradication of poverty

The European Parliament,

–   having regard to Rule 120 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas 17 October is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty;

B.  whereas 1.3 billion people throughout the world continue to live in extreme poverty, while over 850 million are suffering from hunger;

C. whereas unemployment remains a world problem, with approximately 200 million people without a job, including 75 million young people;

D. whereas approximately 621 million young people throughout the world are attending neither school education nor any type of training, are not in any way employed, are not seeking employment and are in danger of being permanently excluded from the employment market;

E.  whereas only 20% of the world population has access to adequate social protection;

1.  Calls on the Commission and Member States to take action at international level with a view to eradicating poverty, ensuring a decent life for all by 2030 and offering our planet a sustainable future from that date;

2.  Calls on the Commission and Member States to strive to achieve sustainable development objectives universally applicable in all countries, ensuring achievement of fundamental standards with regard to education, nutrition, water quality and clean air.
