B7‑0381/2014

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on type-approval for new items of road safety equipment

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 120 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas road safety is a policy area in which the European Union has been consistently involved for decades;

B.     whereas motorcyles are less stable, less easily visible and offer the person using them less protection than cars;

C.     whereas motorcycles are involved in a disproportionately high percentage of serious and deadly traffic accidents by comparison with cars;

D.     whereas various legislative measures, such as Directive 2006/126/EC on driving licences, have already been taken at EU level to improve the safety of motorcyclists;

E.     whereas tests are being carried out on new forms of protection for motorcyclists, such as jackets with built-in airbags, which, unlike more rigid protective devices, cover particularly sensitive areas of the body;

1.      Calls on the Commission to propose standard EU rules on type-approval to replace the current provisional rules.
