Motion for a European Parliament resolution on type-approval for new items of road safety equipment
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 120 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas road safety is a policy area in which the European Union has been consistently involved for decades;
B. whereas motorcyles are less stable, less easily visible and offer the person using them less protection than cars;
C. whereas motorcycles are involved in a disproportionately high percentage of serious and deadly traffic accidents by comparison with cars;
D. whereas various legislative measures, such as Directive 2006/126/EC on driving licences, have already been taken at EU level to improve the safety of motorcyclists;
E. whereas tests are being carried out on new forms of protection for motorcyclists, such as jackets with built-in airbags, which, unlike more rigid protective devices, cover particularly sensitive areas of the body;
1. Calls on the Commission to propose standard EU rules on type-approval to replace the current provisional rules.
