MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the premature nature of the EU-Ukraine association agreement

30.9.2015

pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

B8-1035/2015

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the premature nature of the EU-Ukraine association agreement

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas a Dutch website has gathered 450 000 signatures calling for a referendum in a bid to block the EU-Ukraine association agreement;

B.  whereas, while the outcome of the referendum is not binding, a vote in favour of blocking the agreement would embarrass the Netherlands Government, forcing it to open a debate on the issue;

C.  whereas, to date, only 22 countries have ratified the agreement;

D.  whereas such an agreement appears premature, firstly because it might further aggravate the situation inside and outside Ukraine and secondly because it would be viewed by Russia as a further attack on it by the European Union;

1.  Notes that it is essential for the European Union to conduct its diplomatic relations with Russia in a spirit of peace, fraternity and collaboration, rather than more or less open opposition and/or confrontation, and accordingly urges that the agreement be suspended until a more suitable time.
