Motion for a European Parliament resolution on promoting a study concerning the effects, advantages and any risks to health from the use of 3D printers to produce organs

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,

–  having regard to Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights,

–  having regard to Article 11 of the European Social Charter,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, as highlighted in two Commission reports of 2007 and 2013, the availability of organs for transplant is a major problem throughout the Union (as regards Italy, in 2014 only 3 037 out of 9 191 patients who needed transplants managed to obtain one);

B.  whereas scientific research and research into the development of high-innovation technologies applicable to medicine are the new frontier for treating many diseases;

C.  whereas US universities have achieved cutting-edge results as regards the application of 3D printer technology to medicine, in particular the University of Princeton, which has created the first bionic ear;

1.  Calls on the Commission to propose a study concerning the effects, advantages and any risks to health from the use of 3D printers to produce organs.
