Motion for a European Parliament resolution on bringing a definitive halt to EU membership talks for Turkey
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union establishing the conditions for membership requests,[1]
– having regard to the European Parliament resolution on the 2015 report on Turkey[2]
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently threatened two EU Member States, Germany and the Netherlands, with diplomatic reprisals;
B. whereas the Turkish Government is using an aborted coup attempt as a pretext to gag the media and to haul its political opponents before the courts;
C. whereas these diplomatic incidents, combined with an escalation in human rights violations, clearly show that Turkey is unfit to be a member of the European Union;
1. Calls on the European Commission to bring a definitive halt to EU membership talks for Turkey;
2. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
