Motion for a European Parliament resolution on launching the EU PEACE programme for the Western Balkans
The European Parliament,
– having regard to the Commission communication of 6 February 2018 outlining its strategy for ‘A credible enlargement perspective for and enhanced EU engagement with the Western Balkans’ (COM(2018)0065),
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the Western Balkans are part of Europe, geographically surrounded by EU Member States;
B. whereas a firm, merit-based prospect of EU membership for the Western Balkans is in the Union’s very own political, security and economic interests;
C. whereas all the Western Balkan countries must unequivocally commit to overcoming the legacy of the past, by achieving reconciliation and solving open issues well before accession to the European Union;
1. Urges the Commission to launch a PEACE programme for the Western Balkans, the aim of which being to support peaceful reconciliation in the region;
2. Underlines that the objectives of the PEACE programme should be building positive relationships between candidate countries and potential candidates for EU accession, promoting cross-community and cross-border cooperation, and creating opportunities for young people;
3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the governments and parliaments of the Member States.
