The number of security incidents involving European lorry and cargo drivers doing their job on Europe’s roads is increasing.

Lorry drivers are facing unprecedented challenges in ensuring their cargo reaches its destination without incident. Drivers have reported that the situation near border crossing points and harbours is of particular concern. Both drivers and their cargo are targets for criminal activity and are particularly vulnerable to theft, aggression and lorry-hijacking.

It was recently reported that a blockade of a road near Calais caused a crash that resulted in the death of a Polish van driver, sparking calls for higher security measures.

Does the Commission intend to look into the situation further? What steps, if any, can be taken at EU level to ensure the security of truck drivers and the integrity of the single market? Will the issue of ‘safe parking’ zones around Europe be considered?
