1. Resumption of the session

The session suspended on Thursday, 14 December 2017 was resumed.


2. Opening of the sitting

The sitting opened at 17.05.


3. Statements by the President

The President informed those present that Leyla Zana, winner of the Sakharov Prize in 1995, had been stripped of her status as a member of the Turkish Parliament. He expressed Parliament's solidarity with her and denounced the unlawful nature of what had happened.

He also expressed his concern at the continuing human rights violations taking place in Turkey which were targeting the political opposition and representatives of civil society.


4. Announcement by the President

The President announced that Leo Varadkar, Prime Minister of Ireland, would speak on Wednesday during the first debate on the Future of Europe (point 57 of the final draft agenda), which would be followed by other debates of this kind, thereby putting the European Parliament at the centre of the debate on the future of the EU.


5. Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting

The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.


6. Composition of Parliament

Josu Juaristi Abaunz had given notice in writing of his resignation as Member of Parliament, with effect from 28 February 2018.

In accordance with Rule 4(1) and (3), Parliament had noted that the seat was vacant from that date and had informed the national authority concerned.


7. Composition of committees and delegations

The President had received the following requests for appointments from the S&D and ALDE Groups:
