Establishment of a Museum of Europe

3.11.1999

ORAL QUESTION H‑0630/99
for Question Time at the part‑session in November 1999
pursuant to Rule 43 of the Rules of Procedure
by Petros Efthymiou
to the Commission

The European Commission is to deal with the request for the foundation of a Museum of Europe for which funding is sought from 2001.

Does the Commission intend to set up an interdisciplinary committee in this connection, with representatives from all the Member States, and with the cooperation of historians from the enlargement countries? For matters like these, should provision not be made for the participation of historians from countries outside the Union, which form an integral part of modern European history, Russia for instance? Does the Commission agree with the argument based on historical exclusions, such as excluding Byzantium as a factor in the shaping of the history of Europe?
