Bicentenary of the birth of Victor Hugo

ORAL QUESTION H-0176/02
for Question Time at the part-session in April 2002
pursuant to Rule 43 of the Rules of Procedure
by Pedro Aparicio Sánchez
to the Commission

This year marks the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Victor Hugo and France has organised a number of important events to commemorate the occasion.

This immortal writer’s visionary ideas concerning a united Europe, his dream of a future ‘United States of Europe’ and the international dimension of his work in the context of European Romanticism make him a symbol of European culture and a true precursor of the concept of a unified Europe.

In view of all this, does the Commission intend to organise events on a European scale to commemorate the bicentenary of Victor Hugo’s birth?
