Policing of demonstrations during the Thessaloniki summit

ORAL QUESTION H-0403/03
for Question Time at the part-session in July 2003
pursuant to Rule 43 of the Rules of Procedure
by Ioannis Patakis
to the Council

The surveillance measures and repression carried out by the Greek government in response to the demonstrations bringing together protesters from all over Europe during the Thessaloniki European Council on 20-22 June provoked angry reactions from workers. They were particularly exasperated by the installation of a closed circuit of 26 surveillance cameras in the city for registration and recording purposes; in fact the European Council did not meet in Thessaloniki, since it was moved to Chalkidiki, far from prying eyes and troublesome protests.

Will the Council say whether it decided on these measures itself or whether they were taken on the initiative of the Greek government, whether it applauds these measures which endanger democratic rights and freedoms and whether it approves of these measures after the European Council?
