Designation of SPAs in Bulgaria
3.7.2007
ORAL QUESTION H-0538/07
for Question Time at the part-session in September I 2007
pursuant to Rule 109 of the Rules of Procedure
by Caroline Jackson
to the Commission
On 14 September 2006 the Bulgarian Environment Minister assured MEPs that Bulgaria’s preparations for implementation of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives would be completed in time for its January 2007 accession deadline. Despite this, the designation and protection of a network of SPAs (Special Protection Areas), under Article 4 of the EU Birds Directive, is incomplete. Reports suggest that many sites of European importance are now suffering irrevocable damage.
What actions will the Commission take to enforce EU environment law in Bulgaria and ensure that the Government fully complies with its commitment to designate and protect SPAs?
