Invasive alien species and protection of the red squirrel

WRITTEN QUESTION E-3810/05
by Elspeth Attwooll (ALDE)
to the Commission

What progress has been made by the Commission in the formulation of a proposal for an EU policy on invasive alien species, following the European Strategy on Invasive Alien Species adopted by the Council of Europe in December 2003? In particular, what does the Commission propose to do about the territorial spread of the American grey squirrel, which poses a threat to the survival of the native red squirrel, unprotected under the Habitats Directive?
