WRITTEN QUESTION by Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE/NGL) to the Commission

Subject: Environmental disaster caused by fire at Tagarades landfill site

A fire which has been raging for a week at Tagarades landfill in the region of Thessaloniki (Macedonia — Greece) has caused an environmental disaster. The biogas which is burning is producing dioxin, and the leak of liquids from the landfill has polluted houses and cultivated land in the area.

Tagarades is not a modern and organised sanitary landfill. After this environmental disaster, it is considered imperative to accelerate work to make the landfill safer until it is closed down definitively.

In view of the above, will the Commission say:

Has it been informed of the problem by the Greek authorities?

Which immediate measures are being taken to avert the risk of a new catastrophic fire?

What progress has been made in constructing pipes for pumping off the biogas and the biological purification plant and what is the timetable for completion of these projects?

What plans have been made to take all the necessary measures to repair the damage (cleaning up) and compensate those affected?

What measures must be taken to protect public health and consumers from risks posed by the agricultural produce of the region?
