WRITTEN QUESTION by Marios Matsakis (ALDE) to the Commission

 Subject: Scrapie

Regulation (EC) No 1428/2007 of 4 December 2007 provides for a derogation from the immediate slaughter of sheep and goats with scrapie in order to give Member States time to eradicate the disease within a period of five breeding years. In Cyprus, however, the disease is widespread and the Cypriot authorities have not managed in decades to contain the disease in the slightest. How can the Commission conclude that it will be possible to eradicate scrapie in Cyprus over the next five years? Does the Commission intend to impose special measures to this effect? Will the Commission closely monitor and make regular assessments of Cyprus's progress on scrapie?
