WRITTEN QUESTION by Kathy Sinnott (IND/DEM) to the Commission

 Subject: Coastal erosion in Ireland
 Answer(s)

19.9 % of the Irish coastline is eroding. My constituents in West Kerry are extremely worried as parts of their community are in danger of being swallowed up by the sea. Kerry County Council needs funding immediately to carry out the necessary works. Also full support of the government departments involved is needed so that these works can be carried out without delay. However, the Irish Government is not taking the appropriate steps to identify and prevent the erosion process in these areas, thereby failing to meet the objectives of the Soil Protection Directive (2004/25/EC(1)).

What action can the Commission take in order to ensure that this directive is being properly implemented?

Is there any EU funding available to areas like West Kerry suffering severe coastal erosion?
