to the Commission

In December 2007, seven ThyssenKrupp workers died in a terrible accident at the company's plant in Turin. This constitutes a tragedy which occurred not in a small factory but within a large multinational company.

In view of the attention which the European Union has always paid to matters relating to security at work;

having regard to the rules on corporate third-part liability;

whereas on 15 January 2008 the European Parliament adopted the Willmott report (A6-0518/2007) on health and safety at work;

whereas the Italian press has recently published reports concerning an internal ThyssenKrupp document which reveals the company's intention to punish workers who commented on the tragedy through the media;

does the Commission not consider that it should thoroughly investigate the matter itself and take decisions accordingly — including a decision to inspect the premises?
