Membership of the Trilateral Commission

WRITTEN QUESTION E-4529/08
by Søren Bo Søndergaard (GUE/NGL)
to the Commission

Can the Commission please help clarify the rules, both of the Trilateral Commission (TC) itself and of the EU institutions, regarding membership of the TC.

In reply to a question by the then MEP Patricia McKenna in 2003, Commission President Prodi said: ‘As regards the Trilateral Commission (TC), its rules preclude the participation of any member who holds public office. No Commissioner is therefore a member…’

Can the Commission please state whether Mr Prodi’s answer is still accurate, and if not, what has changed since and when? Can the Commission please also state whether it also considers membership of the Trilateral Commission to be incompatible with holding public office, such as a post as an EU Commissioner or other leading positions in the EU institutions?
