Cloning of animals for food production
3.9.2008
WRITTEN QUESTION E-4860/08
by Ioannis Gklavakis (PPE‑DE)
to the Commission
The cloning of animals runs counter to certain Community animal welfare provisions, given that mortality and morbidity levels for cloned animals are much higher than for animals bred using traditional methods. Furthermore, cloning is expected to have repercussions on biodiversity since it will significantly reduce livestock variety.
In the light of this, what view does the Commission take of animal cloning for food production? Is it envisaging a ban on this practice? Has it drawn up a survey of the effects on humans of consuming meat and dairy products from cloned animals? Does it have figures for EU imports of food products from cloned animals?
