Contribution of the European Union, the Member States and business undertakings to reducing carbon dioxide emissions

WRITTEN QUESTION E-6632/08
by Adamos Adamou (GUE/NGL)
to the Commission

According to Mr Nobuo Tanaka, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, in the light of current trends in the energy sector, carbon dioxide emissions may be expected to rise by 45 % between 2006 and 2030. At the same time it will be necessary to cut carbon dioxide emissions drastically from 2020, so as to bring the level below 26 Gt by 2030. This will require coordinated action by all major energy producers accompanied by a more rapid increase (possibly as much as 36 %) in the use of energy sources emitting low quantities of carbon dioxide.

According to the Commission what contribution can be made by the European Union, the Member States and business enterprises within this sector? How does it intend to resolve the conflict between these noble objectives and the diametrically opposed business interests of companies directly or indirectly involved in sectors producing carbon dioxide emissions? What action does the Commission recommend in order to increase the use of wind, solar and hydroelectric energy?
