WRITTEN QUESTION by Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE/NGL) to the Commission

Subject: Pollution of the River Evrotas
 Answer(s)

The River Evrotas is an important resource for the agricultural areas bordering it. According to a study carried out by the Technical University of Crete under the European environmental programme, LIFE, the biological wastewater treatment plant at Sparta is contaminating the Evrotas and waste is accumulating along the river bank. Residents and local organisations complain of pollution from untreated industrial effluent.

Given that the European Court of Justice has ruled against Greece for failure to comply with Articles 8 and 15 of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC(1) (WFD), (Case C‑264/07), and with Directive 2006/12/EC(2) on waste (Case C‑286/08), will the Commission say whether it is aware of the case of the River Evrotas? If so, what measures will it take to protect the river? Has it included the case of the Evrotas in the general infringement procedure initiated against Greece for failure to implement Directives 2000/60/EC and 2006/12/EC?
