Joint Greek-Bulgarian archaeological park

WRITTEN QUESTION E-2729/09
by Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE/NGL)
to the Commission

Excavations at the burial tumulus of Mikri Doxipara (Evros) and plans to establish a museum in the region are continuing. The finds which have been dated to the time of the Emperor Trajan (90‑110 AD) are considered very significant, and the news has already been presented in the scientific journals and in a documentary programme on the History Channel. Similar finds have been made in the region of Ivailovgrad in Bulgaria, some six kilometres from Doxipara. Apart from completing excavations, those in charge also seek to build museums and a cross-border road between the two countries allowing visitors to visit both these important archaeological sites which present many similarities.

Does the Commission believe that work to complete the excavations in these two archaeological sites, the establishment of museums and the construction of a cross-border road could receive funding under the Greece-Bulgaria Bilateral Territorial Cooperation Programme for the new programming period 2007‑13?
