Connection of the eastern Moselle region to the Bavaria-North Sea axis

WRITTEN QUESTION E-3436/09
by Anne Laperrouze (ALDE)
to the Commission

Lorraine's chemicals sector is suffering from inadequate supplies of petrochemical raw materials. One possible solution would be to connect the Moselle region to the European network of natural gas and olefin pipelines, by linking Carling and Sarralbe (Moselle) with Ludwigshafen (Rhineland-Palatinate).

If a pipeline supplying the region with ethylene and propylene proved to be a regional development tool and a source of employment, would the European Commission be prepared to provide technical expertise?

Is there any EU funding available for this connection or, should funding for the infrastructure itself be unavailable, for a feasibility study?
