Ban on sending back asylum seekers to Greece

Question for written answer E-4415/2010
to the Commission
Rule 117
Louis Bontes (NI)

1. Is the Commission aware of the recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights banning the sending back of asylum seekers to Greece?[1]

2. Does the Commission agree that is objectionable that the ECHR ruling makes it virtually impossible for Member States to deport asylum seekers who enter Europe via Greece? If so, what does the Commission intend to do to ensure that Greece complies with its obligations? If not, why not?

3. Is the Commission aware that the ECHR ruling will lead to enormous problems in the Member States, such as a flood of asylum seekers and more admitted foreigners, with all the associated costs and problems?
