Transport of horses into and across Europe

Question for written answer E-7927/2010
to the Commission
Rule 117
Sidonia Elżbieta Jędrzejewska (PPE)

Animal welfare NGOs and constituents have raised concerns with me about the number of equidae being transported over long distances in the European Union. Can the Commission provide figures from the Trade Control and Expert System (TRACES) to confirm how many equidae were transported between Member States in 2007, 2008 and 2009 under the following categories: registered equidae; equidae for slaughter; equidae for breeding; and equidae for other purposes? Can the Commission also confirm how many equidae were transported into Italy, into France and into Belgium for each of these purposes in 2007, 2008 and 2009 from Romania, Poland, Lithuania and Spain, respectively; and how many equidae in total were imported into Italy, into France and into Belgium under each category in each of the specified years? In addition, can the Commission confirm how many equidae in each of the above categories were transported into the EU from third countries in 2007, 2008 and 2009? Finally, would the Commission not agree that it would be very useful for TRACES data on the number of equidae being transported into and across Europe to be made publicly available on an annual basis, as is the case with data on other species?
