E-001043/2011
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 117
Raül Romeva i Rueda (Verts/ALE)

Subject: Campaign to protect the Spanish greyhound
 Answer(s)

The Spanish greyhound has a long history in Spain in the areas of dog racing and hare coursing. However, it is estimated that each year 100000 of these animals are maltreated and abandoned, in conditions of extreme cruelty, at the end of the coursing or racing season when they are no longer needed.

Has the Commission raised the matter with the Spanish government?

Can the Commission provide information on any measures proposed by the Spanish government to put an end to this situation?
