E-004928/2011
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 117
Charles Tannock (ECR)

Subject: The alleged negative consequences for the UK of new EU minimum veterinary health requirements
 Answer(s)

I have been contacted by constituents regarding the alleged EU veterinary health harmonisation requirements which will no longer permit the UK to insist on the immunisation of pet dogs coming into the country against Echinococcus multilocularis (dog tapeworm), which is potentially transmissible to humans and potentially fatal.

Can the Commission confirm whether this claim made by my constituents is true and, if so, is the Commission aware of the negative effect and threat to human health the legislation might pose and that its implementation would remove a longstanding rule designed to prevent and eradicate a terrible parasitic disease in both humans and animals?
