Explosion risk at the Fukushima nuclear power plant and the introduction of safety requirements

Question for written answer E-012252/2011
to the Commission
Rule 117
Jarosław Leszek Wałęsa (PPE)

On 11 March 2011, Japan was hit by a catastrophic tsunami that tragically caused widespread devastation. The country’s nuclear power plants were also affected. The most serious damage occurred at the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant, where reactors 1, 2 and 3 broke down.

The situation has revealed shortcomings and loopholes in the risk prevention measures taken, which proved insufficient to withstand the powerful forces of nature.

Can the Commission state whether any conclusions have been drawn from this tragedy and whether any steps have been taken to review the current safety arrangements and, if necessary, to improve safety at nuclear power plants in the European Union?
